On the Sulu Sea

sulu-sea

The small room I rent in a Borneo village over the sea, feels strange on my first night. What will it be like to live in a village? Alone in a rented room? A woman on her own in a traditional environment? An Indian among the Simunul Bajaus, a Sikh among Muslims?

  1. Hi Prof Supriya!

Nice meeting you here and honoured to be part of the oldest urban village in Sabah. Kindly forward details on early history of this urban village, where Panglima Matajang came to open this urban village starting in Timbang Island in 18s.

    Thanks Prof,

    • Thanks Sikin. The most detailed version is the one I included in ‘On the Sulu Sea.’ There are mentions of Kg Bokara in a small booklet under my previous name Supriya Bhar entitled ‘Sandakan: One Hundred Years, 1879-1979.’ I also wrote a paper entitled ‘SANDAKAN: Gun Running Village to Timber Centre, 1879-1979’ in 1940 for the Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. I could send you copies via email of these two publications. However, they are focused on Sandakan town. If you would like copies, please write to me at supriya.eltham@outlook.com.
